Two weeks ago, my husband & I celebrated our twenty-fist anniversary with a trip to New York and a musical on Broadway. Seeing a musical was a given. Plays are good, too. But a musical on Broadway, come on…it doesn’t get any better! I chose “Something’s Rotten” about Shakespeare & won Tony Awards-that’s really all I knew.
So, I was expecting to be entertained. Entertained we were! There’s a 2 minute dialogue that makes jokes about 20-25 different musical plots as our hero, another bard in Shakespeare’s England. But, Shakespeare has absolute fame-and is treated like a rock star, that’s the way we first see him-gyrating in tight leather breeches a la any rock legend. The maidens swoon appropriately and the guys want to be him as he rocked out to “Will Power”.
I won’t give the plot away. Just that I laughed til I cried. The Director/Choreographer,Casey Nicholaw, and the hysterically funny ” “Will” played with such pizzazz by Christian Borle- he was “Tom” in “Smash” on TV),won Tony awards and deservedly so. We got tickets at the half price line near Times Square-bring coffee and a pastry-it can be a long line.
